Wealth disparity shapes inequality between blacks and whites. Important achievements and gains in the classroom, on the job, and in paychecks are being reversed by a growing racial wealth gap. This presentation provides evidence for this U-Turn in inequality and explores the main reasons for dramatic black-white wealth disparities. Policies, institutional reforms, and social movements to address closing the racial wealth gap will be discussed. Audience participation is encouraged.

Professor Shapiro’s primary interest is in racial inequality and public policy. He is a leader in the asset development field with a particular focus on closing the racial wealth gap. The Hidden Cost of Being African American: How Wealth Perpetuates Inequality, published by Oxford University Press, 2004 was widely reviewed, including by the Washington Post, Boston Globe, and others. The book was named one of the Notable Books of 2004 by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Mr. Shapiro has appeared on such national programs as Tony Brown’s Journal, The Tavis Smiley Show, Talk of the Nation, CNN, and On Point.

This is the first of five talks in the series which will invite authors whose books have a national profile to discuss issues of interest to people of color. Other discussions in the series will address perspectives on the community of Roxbury past, present and future. Funding for these presentations is provided by Fellowes Athenaeum Trust Fund of the Dudley Public Library in Roxbury. Copies of Mr. Shapiro’s books are on display and available for use at the library. Copies will also be available for sale by A Nubian Notion on the night of the event here.
